Description
This is one of the special moments that as a photographer I was blessed to witness. There is a nearby dipper nest above a creek that I had been observing for a few weeks. I would watch as the parents would deliver the meals, (usually consisting of golden Kokanee Salmon eggs that they had swam to retrieve), to the youngsters and then fly away, only to retrieve more eggs from the creek and repeat the sequence over and over. Each time the adults approached with the food, the young would open their mouth and cry out in excitement. One day I went to the nest, only to find the chicks had flown! All of the sudden I heard the chicks cry out-- to my delight a young chick, still partially blind and with limited flying skills, was feeding, and in very close proximity to my location. Here is the youngster, with a very wide open mouth, calling out to it's Mama. Hurry Up-- I'm hungry!
Classified as a climate-threatened bird, the American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus)
is a good indicator of water quality. It has declined or disappeared in some former haunts where streams have become polluted. Found in the western United States and Canada, it's habitat is fast-flowing mountain streams . It often moves from higher to lower elevations during the colder months of the year.
This diminutive little bird with few colourful markings seems rather non-descript or remarkable at first glance. The casual observer might overlook it, however they would be wrong that is is just another small bird. Once they observed it's almost non-stop behavior, that assessment would change.
Most food is caught underwater. The dipper may walk with only its head submerged, or may dive, "flying" underwater and walk on the bottom, probing under stones in the streambed. It will also will swim on surface to pick up floating insects. Occasionally it will take insects from streamside rocks, and although it has the ability to do so, seldom makes short flights to catch insects in mid-air.
Once the food is obtained, rather than eat it underwater, the dipper will bring the food to the surface where it will consume it on a rock or nearby shoreline. Although its food sources range from aquatic arthropods to small fry, the dipper particularly enjoys the fertilized golden eggs of the Kokanee salmon.
