Description
The weather proved to be changeable during the second Normandy campaign. On more than one occasion, Monet despaired of not finding any caves in the cliffs that would allow him to work in all weathers. The rare bright spells were always waited for impatiently. The arrival of the art dealer Durand-Ruel provided a pleasant diversion during the stay, but this was abruptly brought to an end by the visit of a local bailiff who gave the painter cause for concern. The artists despondency was alleviated by an encouraging letter from the dealer and he was able to start work again. On his return to Poissy in October, Monet delivered two series of thirteen canvases to him, representing exclusively subjects from the area around Pourville.
