Off To Church - Christmas Eve Services
Digital Art - Digital Painting/photographic Art
The matching lithograph to "Off to Grandmas" that I posted earlier in the week.
The original image of Christmas Eve is listed in the Library of Congress as belonging in the public domain. I have created this digital painting based on a small copy of the original. This is a very popular vintage Christmas card readily available online, occasionally with some additional buildings that do not appear in the original. Bauer also painted a matching image called Christmas Morn which I have also painted and posted earlier. Vintage winter scenes were also among the most popular of the Currier and Ives lithographs printed in New York at around the same time.
CAPTION: Christmas Eve, Painting by W. C. Bauer.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: These Christmas landscapes were standard fare for the large lithographic printers of the era and this one was especially well printed and preserved.
ARTIST: W. C. Bauer (1862-1904) was a resident of New Jersey. I could find almost nothing else about him - which is really too bad considering that he was obviously a fine artist.
ORIGINAL MEDIA: Raphael Tuck & Sons, London, printed the original lithograph on which this new print is based.
Raphael Tuck & Sons
Raphael Tuck & Sons, publishers from the mid 1800's into the early 20th Century. Raphael Tuck & Sons were proudly known to be the Publishers to Her Majesties the King and Queen, with printing houses in London, Paris and New York.
They began in London, England in 1866, selling pictures and frames. Raphael Tuck was joined by his three sons in 1871 and published their first Christmas greeting card.
In 1893 they were granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria.
Adolph Tuck, one of the sons, produced their first picture postcard in 1894 of Mt. Snowden in Wales, which was sold to tourists visiting the site.
Little else can be found about the artist himself - if anyone has further information, I'd love to have it.
