Description
This branch of a Fouquieriq splendens, otherwise known as Oxotillo, is plentious in the Arizona Soronan Desert. This plant was taken near the Arizona and California border. Thorns that can gouge badly, and beautiful little flower buds, immediately capture your eye. These white with red tipped buds, once bloomed, the red tip curls back extending little red and yellow tentacles which insects pollenate. They make me think of an octopus - its tentacles reaching out for food, waiting to capture something tasty. For the plant, the insects thrive on the sweetness of the pollen.

Beautiful photography, Debby. Ocotillos are a shrub (mistakenly called a cactus) with un-branched spiny stems that grow from a short trunk. They flower in the springtime and leaf out during the rainy season. Most of the time they look like dead sticks. One of my favorite Sonoran Desert plants. Near to where I live, there are forests of them. Hummingbirds love these flowers.
