Description
Colored pencil drawing of a Northern Crayfish, by Conni Schaftenaar
Prismacolor and Cezanne Colored Pencils on Koh-i-noor Heavy Drawing Paper.
My brother lives near Denver Colorado and goes fishing often. He caught some Northern, or "Virile", crayfish that are about half the size of a small lobster and sent me photos. I did two drawings to send to him. His wife is Chinese-American, and in Mandarin, a Crayfish is called a "small dragon shrimp"! I love that!
I was fascinated with the color of the claws, the size of the crayfish (we grew up in Michigan and our crayfish in local waters are maybe an inch and a half to 2 inches long) and the huge orange knobby growths along the claws. They are ugly and beautiful all at the same time!

I used to keep crayfish in an aquarium in my classroom. Sometimes a student would catch and present me with an unusual looking one, including an all blue. You have caught their personality perfectly! l/f

Thanks, Marsha, I agree! These big crawdads with blue claws my brother has been trapping are miles from the little ones we used to catch in creeks and small lake sides when we were kids - little mudbugs that were about 2" long at most and all tan/brown. These beautiful claws with their orange knobby protrusions just fascinated me!

Wow--I love the color on his/her claws. I taught high school biology for over 20 years, and often kept a 'crawdad' as a class pet(students would bring them to me). Apparently, Texas, where I live, has over 400 species of them. They are fascinating creatures. l/f
