Rbanos Tradicional
Noche de Las Rbanos (The Night of the Radishes is a folk art festival held on annually on December 23rd in the Zocalo. One can see sculptures carved out of radishes depicting Nativity scenes and Gueleguetza Dancing along with Day of the Dead scenes and musicians. It's truly a one of a kind celebration. The Radishes are grown locally, harvested 5 days before the festival, leaving little time to create these masterpieces. The radishes are not for consumption as they've been treated with various chemicals in order to create lengths of up to 50cm. Legend has it that it began with a monk who suggested the farmers carve shapes out of radishes to entice the public to buy produce at the markets. This tradition has continues for centuries.
