Description
Nevermind is the second studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on 14 September 1991 by DGC Records. Kurt Cobain wanted the album to sound like a fusion of pop music like the Knack and Bay City Rollers along with heavier bands like Black Flag and Black Sabbath. The album is typically associated with “grunge” and unexpectedly became a critical and commercial success. In January 1992 it reached #1 on the US Billboard 200, selling about 300,000 copies a week. The lead single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” peaked at #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Nevermind was responsible in part for bringing both grunge and alternative rock music to the mainstream and ending the dominance of “hair metal”. It has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 2004 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry, which collects “culturally, historically or aesthetically important” sound recordings. It appears in a number of best-album lists and is hailed by many critics as on of the best albums of all time.
