Description
Mourning Dove looking beautiful on a snowy morning in Colorado. I took this photo in my back yard; she was sitting in a tree there. I have a bunch of bird feeders on the deck, and so doves will often hang out in the trees nearby.
From southern Canada to central Mexico, this is a graceful, slender-tailed, small-headed dove that’s common, often abundant in open country and along roadsides. Mourning Doves perch on telephone wires and forage for seeds on the ground; their flight is fast and bullet straight. Their soft, drawn-out cooing sounds like laments and is one of our most familiar bird sounds. When taking off, their wings make a sharp whistling or whinnying. Mourning Doves are the most frequently hunted species in North America. The mourning dove helps itself by breeding prolifically: in warm climates, Mourning Doves may raise up to six broods per year, more than any other native bird.
