Description
This is a very unexpected photo taken during June 13, 2021's lightning storm over Kootenay Lake, BC, Canada.
As I shot in the rain and wind, to my naked eye the scene appeared mostly dark, with an incredible amount of brilliant flashing in the distance. However, once the image was opened up in computer, the long-exposure settings and a closer examination revealed many surprises. In addition to the unexpected features revealed, the varying and unusual light conditions from one area of the sky to the next had the effect of turning it into a most surreal-looking photograph.
In the image, although no individual lightning strikes were captured, to the left you can see the brilliance of the white clouds and clear blue sky. On the right, the Northern Lights are glowing a gorgeous green, a wildfire in the proximity of Lasca Creek has started (thankfully extinguished itself-- I had thought the orange glow was just the navigation light on top of the channel marker- which is clearly shown as well), and an orange-tinged cloud seems strangely out of place (which I suspect is reflected cloud light from the communites of Harrop/Proctor). A very close look shows two shooting stasr in the middle of the image between clouds and very top of sky). Although it appears there are thousands of stars shown, due to clarity issues and the fact that they even show in the aurora/cloud section, I suspect many of them are rain drops that had started to fall in my vicinity. The darker coloured waters of Kootenay lake seem almost "normal" in contrast to the sky, which I suspect is due to a rain cloud cover overhead, blocking light.
It was a pretty epic and wild night by all accounts. Mother Nature is indeed a trickster, and this shot is most likely a personal once-in-a-lifetime photo.
This is a high resolution full-length image that measures 15x9 inches to give viewers the full effect of the night.
