Description
Matthew Talbot, his wife Mary and 7 children lived in this tiny cabin. At one time the Talbots operated a grist mill here, near the Watauga River but when hostilities broke out a fort was hastily constructed. It did not resemble typical forts from that time. Basically, a palisade wall was built up to an existing wall creating in effect an enclosed defense.
The hostilities occurred because of 2 main factors. The first was that the Indians, primarily Cherokee Indians were gradually losing their hunting grounds to the settlers and their belief in Eminent Domain. Couple that problem and the fact that the British were instigating and arming them during the American Revolutionary War.
