Description
One of a number of historic bridges in Maryland, this unusual bascule or drawbridge is a stunning white colored forming a picturesque landscape over the Pokomoke River. Snow Hill Bridge on the outskirts of Snow Hill was built in 1932. This 45-foot, concrete single leaf bascule bridge was one of a group of movable bridges built in the 1920s and 1930s to meet the need of increased highway travel on the Eastern Shore as steamboat transportation decreased. It is one of the few extant movable span bridges from the first third of the 20th century. It is now listed on the National Historic Registry list.
This historic bridge hovers over the Pocomoke River, a tidal basin. A phone number must be called 5 hours ahead of time to have the bridge raised. The bridge is so low that certain times of the day not even a kayak can go under the bridge.
