Map Of Manhattan
Painting - Oil On Canvas
This is a reproduction of Edgar Viele's topographical map of Manhattan prior to its urbanization. It was created I 1865 and shows canals, swamps, rivers, ditches, ponds, meadows and drainage basins. Viele studied that data for twenty years and relied on the survey of 1807 and the Commissioner's Plan of 1811 which laid out the city's grid system. Since its publication it has been an invaluable aid in the development of the city.
