Description
The pond was busy with all kinds of activity in the early morning. Lots of Mallard ducks were hanging out, some going in for a swim, while others stayed on the grass nearby. Mergansers were busy fishing for crayfish in the pond, and the occasional little Bufflehead duck would dive underwater, looking for something tasty to eat. Occasionally someone would fly off; this Mallard drake looks so handsome showing off his colors in the golden light of dawn as he takes off, a few water droplets falling as he flies away.
Perhaps the most familiar of all ducks, Mallards occur throughout North America and Eurasia in ponds and parks as well as wilder wetlands and estuaries. They are ancestors of most strains of domesticated ducks; the ancestral wild Mallard is a trim, elegant, wary, fast-flying bird. The male’s beautiful green head, gray flanks, and black tail-curl make it the most easily identified duck. Mallards have long been hunted, and almost all domestic ducks come from this species.
