Description
The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group in Africa of semi-nomadic people settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They were first thought to have originated in North-West Kenya around the 15th century before travelling south.
The Maasai people have many of their own customs and their lifestyle focuses very heavily on their livestock, and also their children. In Maasai culture, the more cattle and children he has, the more prosperous he is said to be.
Another tradition within Maasai culture is their love of music and dance and also the "Adumu" which is captured in my photograph here taken in Tsavo East. This traditional dance initiates an adult boy into a warrior man. In this dance, the boys jump as high as possible while music and claps egg them on in the background. This dance is primarily performed during Eonoto, the coming of age ceremony of warriors.
