"Luna Moth" by Patti Deters. One of the largest moth in North America, the Luna Moth (Actias luna) is a Nearctic moth in the family Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae. It is also sometimes called the American moon moth or giant silk moths. This flying insect has can have a wingspan of up to 7 inches across! These green bugs are born without a mouth and never eat or drink. Living only about one week as a winged adult, their sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs before they die. Luna moths are nocturnal and their main predator is bats, though many birds find them tasty as well.
