Description
Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) and Mottled Ducks (Anas fulvigula), foraging in early morning light in the Los Angeles River a few years ago.
Mottled Ducks are mostly non-migratory and forage in shallow water, mostly by dabbling with bill at mud just below water as in this photo. Their diet consists of seeds of aquatic plants and grasses, insects, snails and small fish.
Canada Geese are skilled at living in human-altered areas, and have established breeding colonies in urban and cultivated habitats, which provide food and few natural predators.
This photo is part of my series on the Los Angeles River, a wonderful urban wildlife habitat undergoing restoration in an attempt to return it and its wildlife to the original glory. This part of the River is lined with lush green vegetation and is home to a variety birds and fish.
