Lavenders bloom in spring and create wonderful purple fields. They also smell great! Here a lonely tree is in a lavender field. At the background there is a big mountain. It is called Olympus and it is the highest mountain in Greece. The sunset colors the sky and the clouds with vibrant red, purple and yellow tones making a serene outdoors scene.
Lavender is also know as lavandula. Its Latin name is lavare which means to wash. It is a genus of 47 known species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. The Lavandula angustifolia in the photo is commercially used for the extraction of essential oils. It yields an oil with sweet overtones, and can be also used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications. Over the centuries it has been used in traditional medicine and cosmetics.
The photo was taken at Mesimeri next to Thessaloniki in Greece. For many years I wanted to travel to Provence in France just to view the beautiful lavender fields and take photos of them. So, when I learned that there are some fields next to my hometown I couldn't miss the opportunity. That lonely tree made a beautiful scene and I was lucky enough to have a beautiful sunset that day!
