Description
Largest Cement Totem Pole by Lynn Sprowl.
This is on the Oklahoma Route 66 things to see. It is located on Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. Listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. It is billed as the "World's Largest Concrete Totem Pole." Materials included 6 tons of Steel, 28 tons of cement, and 100 tons of sand and rock. Completed in 1948, the totem pole was approximately 90 ft high and 30 ft wide and it rests on the back of a turtle, referring to a Native American creation story. The entire Totem Pole is decorated with approximately 200 bas relief images, which included brightly colored Native American portraits, symbols and animal figures.
It's really quite interesting.
Ed Galloway returned to the United States after his military service in 1914. He was employed by Tulsa-based philanthropist Charles Page, who employed him as a manual arts teacher at the Children's Home orphanage in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
