Description
Laocoon group is a famous group of sculptures unearthed on the Esquiline Hill in Rome in 1506. The date of the statue seems to be 40-30 B.C. Laocoon, a mythical priest of Troy, warned his countrymen not to accept the wooden horse gift left outside Troy by the Greeks. The gods directed their wrath towards him and his sons in the form of two sea serpents after he hurled a spear at the gift dedicated to the goddess Athena to prove that it was hollow. Pope Julius II bought the important sculpture and displayed it in the Statues Courtyard where it stands now at the Vatican Museum in Rome.
