I always wanted to paint a Kio Fish watercolor painting…so many watercolorists have a koi fish piece in their portfolio. I needed a strong piece for an art show I was entering in my home town. Well I know now; I will never paint another Kio fish watercolor (well….maybe…..). This sucker was hard to do, when I layered the water over the fish, I lost the bright color of the fish, and if I painted the water over the fish first, then added color of the fish skin, even delicately with hairdryer in hand, I got mud! Out came the acrylics and Daniel Smith Medium Red Cadmium watercolor and Holbein cadmium red light watercolor. Patience, virtue and lots of time got me through this project, and I missed my art show deadline as well...goof!

To make the colors shine as if reflected, I used the Lascaux Transparent 1-UV as a varnish…very lightly single brush over artwork and viola, out popped the color, the water has a great reflection…finally!

The next year I entered a juried art show with Koi Fucious and it past the jury inspection. The opening party to celebrate the exhibition was one of the best I have been to including some of the finest array of artwork styles and subjects I have witness of my fellow artists and new artists from our local college. When the awards were handed out, I won Best of Show and immediately broke out in tears! You see, the artwork in this exhibition was unsurpassed by any other exhibition I have been a part of…and my piece, my art-won an award which placed my piece above all others…I was shocked, honored and deeply grateful! That night I felt for the first time, all my years of working so hard to become an artist…I felt truly there…
