Knigh Castle is situated in a field about two miles from the village of Puckane and four miles from the town of Nenagh. It's in a townland and civil parish in the historical Barony of Ormond Lower in County Tipperary, Ireland.
The castle is in fairly good repair, though it is gradually getting older and more worn looking. Knigh Castle was built by the Normans in the twelfth century (so, about eight hundred years ago).
People say there is an underground ladder that reaches from the castle to the 'Ciaran' which is on the right side in Knigh Hill. On this 'Ciaran' there is a big ivy tree, and if the Normans were in danger of attack, they went up along the ladder. When they came to the door at the top of this 'ciaran' they opened it and came up. They used to hide under the ivy tree. The place of the door in the 'ciaran' is covered over by a big rock, which would weigh about three hundred tons.
Inside Knigh Castle there are stairs made of stone. The castle is in very good repair. People living near it say that if you went up to the castle at twelve on November night, you would see three ghosts running up and down the stairs, hand in hand with a sword by each of their sides. They would then disappear after five minutes.
It is said that when the Normans were routed out of the castle, a poor man and his son went to live in it. This son took sick. One morning he was very ill, but still, his father went out to work. When he returned at night his son was dead. The man was so heartbroken after him that he laid down by his side and died. This was on Christmas eve. If a person went up to the castle on Xmas eve you would see a man and a boy lying on the ground floor. The man is seen crying and his son is by his side dead. Some of the old people say that the castle will fall on the nicest girl that passes by it.
On account of all those tales about the castle, it's still a very interesting building.
