Description
With it's double curved staircase and bell tower at top, the Kaslo British Columbia city hall is one of the finest examples of 190os architecture in Canada, and one of only two wooden municipal hall buildings currently in use in all of Canada.
The Municipal Hall building was built in 1898 for the City of Kaslo. Kaslo was incorporated in 1893 and was the 7th municipality in British Columbia to do so. It was used for the municipal offices of the City of Kaslo, the Council Chambers, the Court House for the Provincial Government on the top floor until 1912 and the jail was in the basement.
Today, it is still used for the municipal offices and Council Chambers of the Village of Kaslo. The Kaslo and District Public Library is in the basement. Kaslo relinquished city status and became a Village in January 1959. The Kaslo Municipal Hall was declared a National Historic Site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in 1984.
