Description
The Joshua Tree is the largest of the yuccas and they sometimes grow in groves. The height varies from 15-40 feet and up to 3 feet in diameter. They take 50-60 years to mature and can lived up to 150 years old. Only the female Pronuba Moth pollinates these trees. No other creature has been known to pollinate the Joshua Tree. While many sites claim they only grow in the Mojave Desert, I photographed these in Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. They also grow in California, Utah and Arizona.
The Joshua produces clusters of cream color bell-shaped flowers up to 1.5 inches long with yellow-green sepals. They bloom in spring and have a most unpleasant odor. They also bear a fleshy green-brown fruit containing many flat seeds. The fruit falls soon after. I have not learned if the fruit is edible like other parts of certain cacti.
The artist, Mary Deal, is an Amazon best-selling, award-winning, multi-genre author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection, writers' reference books and self-help. Read about her here: http://tinyurl.com/3z8pm3f
