This image of the Iris beard has a very different feel from the Iris Afternoon #6. While that one sleeps, this one seems to be on stage with the bright warmth of a spotlight shining on it and the excited energy of the crowd watching from the dark.

I obviously love the beard of these flowers and the secret cave-like openings from which they protrude. . . the upright 'standards,' the drooping 'falls,' the 'crest, 'stigma' and 'anther' that hide deep within and the 'signal patch' that marks the petals with a delicate pattern. I really enjoyed exploring the many views of these flowers, like a hiker exploring a cave!

I had cut several tall golden yellow irises yesterday in fear that freezing temperatures overnight would do them some harm. They glowed near my sink in the afternoon sunshine streaming through the window and filled the air with a delicate perfume. Of course, I could not resist and grabbed my camera seeing so many different angles of beauty. I hope you enjoy this series of my afternoon with irises.
