I was drawn to this man at the Senso-ji Buddhist temple in Asakusa Tokyo for his intense focus amid the swirling mass of visitors. He faced the main hall of the temple holding his incense before placing it in the Jokoro, or incense burner behind him. Pilgrims and tourists alike purchase incense at shops nearby, place it in the Jokoro, and then wave the smoke over themselves with a belief in the healing effect of the smoke. In Buddhism, incense burning is also a sacred offering to honor the Buddha. The burning of incense teaches the necessity to burn away negative qualities within oneself in order to reveal the pure self within. The aroma purifies the atmosphere, inspiring the development of a pure mind. Sensō-ji was founded in 645 AD, making it the oldest temple in Tokyo and one of its most significant.
