Description
The cemetery was a former plantation and the grounds hold the remains of many from varied backgrounds including slaves who once worked the plantation to a Civil War General. The cemetery is located within the "Garden District" of New Orleans. It was the 2nd Protestant cemetery to be built in New Orleans. The long wall is where indigent are interred as well as those that are waiting for a family tomb, vault, or mausoleum to be readied which can be a lengthy wait due to the fact that once someone dies they are put into a wooden coffin then put into a slot in the vault for 1 year and a day.The coffin is then removed, and the bones are put in a bag, labeled and shoved to the back of the vault, leaving room for the next family member who may pass on. This wall is where the recently deceased wait till they reach their final resting place. Hence the title "Homeless"
