Holliwell Bridge In Iowa

Description
The Holliwell Bridge, spanning the Middle River, is the longest covered bridge, and the longest remaining timber bridge in Iowa. In 1879 the existing bridge at Holliwell was a 40-foot timber structure that needed replacement due mostly to weather damage. A 110-foot timber truss on iron cylinder piers was built and completed in 1880 for a cost of $1,180. This bridge uses a town lattice truss configuration, with a pair of timber arches superimposed over the truss, covered by a wood frame, roof and walls. Holliwell Bridge is located near Winterset, Iowa, in Madison County.
