Borax was first discovered in the Death Valley area in the 1870s but the remote location prevented successful mining operations until 1883 when the Harmony Borax Works opened. Twenty-Mule teams helped solve the difficult task of getting the product 165 miles to the railhead in Mojave in an arduous 10-day trip. So much so that the 20-Mule Team because the symbol of the borax industry. The mule teams pulled loads weighing up to 36 tons including water for men and animals. The rear wagon wheels were up to 7 feet high and the front wheels 5 feet high. Each wheel weighed 1000 lbs and it took five men to change a wheel. The entire unit of wagon and mules was more than 100 feet long. The Harmony Borax Works only operated from 1883 to 1888 and this wagon is one of the two remaining original wagons.
