Description
This is a reproduction of “The Greeks and Trojans Fighting over the Body of Patroclus”that was painted between 1836 and 1844 by Antoine Wiertz. After the lover of Achilles was killed by Hector, Prince of Troy, he was stripped of his armor by his killer and the Trojans attempted to take the body. Ajax and Menelaus led the Greeks to reclaim the body and Wiertz captures the tumult and struggle. He was born in Belgium in 1806 and was patronized in his early years by Pierre Joseph de Paul de Maibe and King Willem I. His work placed second in the Prix de Rome in 1828 and he moved to Paris the next year. He won in 1832 and lived in Rome for three years until 1837 when he established his residence at Liege. This work was his first on a grand scale. He moved to Brussels after the death of his mother in 1844. In his later years he was able to get Belgium to establish a museum for his works which he donated to the kingdom. He died on June 18, 1865.
