Description
A Great White Egret is perched atop a piling in Deep Creek inside the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve, Beaufort, North Carolina. Slightly smaller than their cousin, the Great Blue Heron, these large wading birds are also know as the Common Egret, Great Egret and Great White Heron. These magnificent birds can be found in most of the United States. During breeding season they can be found nesting in colonies in the southeastern United States. Look for them in saltwater wetlands, estuaries, ponds, swamps, streams, rivers and other watery areas where they hunt by wading in the shallows. The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society.
