Graceland is the seventh solo album by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was produced by Simon, engineered by Roy Halee and released on August 25, 1986 by Warner Bros. Records. After the breakup with his musical partner Art Garfunkel, marriage with Carrie Fisher and the commercial failure of his previous album Simon become fascinated by bootleg cassettes of South African township music. He and Roy Halee traveled to Johannesburg and spent two weeks recording with South African musicians. The album features a mixture of musical genres that include pop, rock, a cappella, zydeco, isicathamiya and mabaganga. Simon later toured with the South African musicians that performed on the album.
Graceland is Certified 5X Platinum, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1987 and Record of the Year in 1988. The album is listed #71 on the list of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 2006 Graceland was added to the United States National Recording Registry as “culturally, historically or aesthetically important”. As of 2016 it is estimated the album has sold 14 to 16 million copies.
