Description
Go Greyhound and Leave the Driving to Us. A popular slogan from 1956 for the Greyhound Bus Company. An advertising jingle that remained in use for another 40 years.
The company itself was formed between 1913 and 1914. An emigrant from Sweden who settled in Minnesota first tried making a living as a used car salesman, but failing that began transporting miners for a fee to and from Hibbing MN to Alice MN.
From this humble beginning the company grew, sometimes fitfully as through the Great Depression, other times dramatically. The Worlds Fair in Chicago increased ridership. A Hollywood movie starring Claudette Colbert, "It Happened One Night" told the story of a woman on a cross country bus trip that further increased interest in vacation travel by bus. During WW2 the buses were used to transport military personnel to bases and workers were bused to munition factories and other factories in support of the war effort.
The company image was bolstered by its drivers. A lot of them veterans, who were disciplined, personable and professional. They had to drive for extended periods of time for long distances over roads that were not comparable to todays highway systems. They were glorified in a poem by Ogden Nash as spunky and artful titled The Buses That Travel To Scranton Travel In Pairs alluding to a dangerous occupation.
My Dad was one such driver and before his retirement received a safety award for 35 years safe driving.

“… Some say the travelers saw the Wendigo. Or were eaten by bears. I know not the horrid answer, I only know That the buses headed for Scranton travel in pairs.” Ogden Nash
Jim Cook replied:
Joe, I super imposed those words over a photo of my dad in his uniform standing in front of his bus.
