Photographic artwork by Cindy Treger. Photographed at the Gettysburg Battlefield in Gettysburg, PA. General Robert E. Lee (1/19/1807 - 10/12/1870) was the commander of the Confederate States Army. He commanded the Army of Northern VA during the Civil War from 1862 until his surrender of the entire army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattax Court House on April 9, 1865. Lee was a top graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and was a military engineer in the U.S. Army for 32 years. In 1865 he became the president of Washington College in Lexington, VA. In 1975, the U.S. Congress posthumously restored Lee's citizenship effective 6/13/1865. He is sitting on his faithful horse "Traveller." His monument was dedicated 6/6/1917.

Fantastic monument of one of our nations most controversial leaders. Im glad too see our history has not been completely destroyed. Good and Bad, we need to remember.
