Description
"Frostbitten Deer Ears" by Patti Deters. This Whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is looking directly at the camera, totally unconcerned that her photo is being taken. The ears on this female deer are deformed from frostbite after an unusually cold winter at Fort Snelling State Park in Minnesota, USA. These large wild mammals are conditioned to stand cold weather, but sometimes extremities are exposed to freezing cold temperatures for too long and cell tissue freezes and dies. Thankfully, this doe is otherwise healthy and seems to have suffered no adverse side effects to the frostbitten ears.
