Description
A black crowned night heron forages in a swamp in Tampa, florida's Lettuce lake Park.
The black-crowned night heron (nycticorax nycticorax) is the most widespead heron in the world and can be found on all continents except for Australia and Antarctica. They forage in freshwater, brackish water and saltwater wetlands from estuaries, marshes and swamps, to rivers, lakes and reservoirs. In the Americas they can be found in central southern Canada, most of the United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and most of South America.
The black-crowned night heron is an opportunistic feeder, eating almost anything that's small enough and edible that comes within its range including carrion, plant material and garbage. Their diet consists mainly of fish and freshwater organisms, grabbing prey in their bills rather than stabbing it, before swallowing it whole in most cases.
They are most active at night and dusk and will stand still for long periods of time wairing for prey to come within range. They build nest in colonies, usually over water.
