Description

Da Vinci described the Fiumelatte River along the east side of Lake Como (through the town of the same name) as having ‘inestimable uproar and noise’. During its intermittent flow, it also has enough power to carve some additional pathways down the mountainside into the lake. This is one such pathway. Fiumelatte owes its fame to its identification as the shortest river in Italy, having a length of about 250 m. It flows from a cavity in the Bergamo Alps into Lake Como, just south of Varenna. Aside from the short length, another peculiarity is its annual intermittency: it usually dries up in the middle of October and reappears in the second half of March. Luckily I visited in May so that I could witness the raging flow. This intermittent phenomenon could imply that the river is the vent of an unexplored underground cavity in the mountains, which gets periodically filled. The river can be viewed from the lakeside in the town of Fiumelatte, or after a short hike, from its source up the mountainside.
