Description
Final Salute Watercolor Painting.
Ten years ago I found a photo by Kenn Mann depicting M/Sgt. William Wilson training for final military honors. The moment I saw the photo, I knew I would have to turn it into a portrait quilt. I did make the quilt (which is available to see on my Instagram Feed) and also spoke to M/Sgt Wilson before his retirement. I quilted both M/Sgt Wilson's name as well as my father's name in the flag of the quilt.
A few days ago, I thought it might be fun to paint a few of my portrait quilts, and because Final Salute has such personal meaning for me, it was my first one to paint.
I am an Air Force Brat; my father spent twenty years in the Air Force. We traveled the world, and I had to most marvelous upbringing. Well, those Saturday morning inspections of the bedroom were a bit tough though.
We honored my father with a military funeral, and the spent shells from the twenty-one gun salute remain inside the folded flag I was given.
I hope viewing this painting brings out a sense of pride.
