Description
Cut away diagram of an EMD F-Series Locomotive. EMD produced 13 different versions of this engine between November 1939 and November 1960. There was a total of 7,648 units produced making it the single most successful engine series that EMD produced. They were all powered by a single V-16 Diesel unit with each cylinder being 567 Cubic Inches. They ranged in horse power from 1,350 to 1,800 with the majority of them being 1,500. These were owned by almost every railroad in existence during the time frame they were produced. There were a number of options that could be selected when ordering the locomotive with just a few of them being, freight or passenger version, horn, pilot style, gearing, steam generator, dynamic brakes, A or B unit, fuel tank size, plus more. With the gearing selection many of these were ordered for high speed passenger service. On straight track these engines could exceed 120mph and often ran between Chicago and L.A. with an average speed of 105mph including stops~! Very few of these run on mainline service today (2020) with Kansas City Southern RR being the most notable exception having a 4 unit set for their special passenger service. Many are still in use by short lines and tourist railroads.
