Description
Endangered Plant Habitat in Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve, California.
- Habitat conservation photography by Ram Vasudev
This Plant Habitat was purchased from The Nature Conservancy in 1989 by California’s Department of Fish & Game in order to protect existing populations of rare and endangered plants. The property was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1991. It is part of the Rare Plant Program, established to protect the state’s diverse native plants.
I was fascinated by the shapes of the minty-green shrubs called Great Basin sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) in the foreground, contrasting nicely with the backdrop of dark-green pinyon-juniper woodland.
The sagebrush prefers drier plains, mesas or rocky areas with deep soils. It is found from four thousand to ten thousand feet in elevation. It often grows in habitats such as the cold desert shrub or pinyon-juniper woodlands, as here. It is an important winter browse plant for a number of wildlife species and is also used in herbal medicine.
