Description
An echo moth rests on a seagrape leaf. It has a prominent set of white antennae that resemble feathers.
Echo moths are found in scrub, flatwoods, thickets and open habitats in much of Florida. The range includes Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
The moths have a wingspan of about 4.5cm (1-3/4 in.) and are overall white with grayish-brown markings on the wings similar to many of the tiger moths. The larvae are 4.5cm (1-3/4 in.) long, fairly stout, mostly a reddish-orange color, yellow along the lower sides and with transverse black and yellow bands on the upperside. The hairlike structures (setae) are black growing from orange warts.
Larval food plants include coontie, cabbage palm, crotons, lupines, oaks and persimmon.
