At a cost of $294,000, the Crescent Hotel opened May 1, 1886, as a year-round resort.

The architect of the Crescent, was Isaac S. Taylor, from St. Louis, Missouri. He was known for his leadership in the execution of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Mr. Taylor designed ten hotels, nine were actually built, but only a few remain standing today.
He used various styles including French Renaissance and Richardsonian Romanesque styles, to give the Crescent a uniquely authentic style, including square stone work, Roman arches over the windows and French doors. Stone specialist were brought in from Ireland to work on the building project. 18 inch stones were quarried near Beaver, Arkansas and cut so exact that the walls were fitted without mortar.
The Crescent is thee dream of General Powell Clayton, with financial support from Richard Kerens. Previous to their business roles in this nation, they were both in the army during the Civil War. After the war, they helped build the nation’s railroads and were involved in politics. Kerens became Ambassador to Austria-Hungary. Clayton became Ambassador to Mexico.
Clayton moved to Eureka Springs in 1882, where as president of the Eureka Improvement Company, he worked to develop the water and sewer systems for the city.
There are more than 60 springs in and around Eureka Springs. The springs became known as “healing water” as thousands of tourists came to visit the small town in the late 19th century.
Across the valley from the hotel, are the grounds of the Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs. The outdoor drama depicts the last week in the life of Jesus Christ.
