Description
"Courting Bison in Yellowstone National Park" by Catherine Sherman.
A bison bull bellows his love to a female bison in the Hayden Valley of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, undeterred by a sulfurous mist from the nearby Mud Volcano and Sulphur Cauldron, two thermal features. Sunshine breaking through the fog bathes the courting pair.
The Yellowstone Park bison herd is the largest public herd of American bison in the United States. In 2016, it was estimated that the bison population in Yellowstone was 5,000. The American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (wisent) are the largest surviving terrestrial animals in North America and Europe.
Hayden Valley is a large, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger. Bison frequently graze in this beautiful valley.
