Description
We get our second wildflower bloom in Southeastern Arizona when the Summer Monsoon begins. After a week of rains the Common Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) start to sprout up along roadsides everywhere. Towering up to 9 feet tall, they're not easy to photograph for they bob about in the slightest breeze, and those yellow petals can burn out a Nikon sensor in a heartbeat if the Sun is out.
Once in a while, we get completely overcast days with no breeze whatsoever. When that happens I grab my camera gear, gulp down my coffee, and get out the door as fast as I can. "Good" weather like that provides a wonderful natural diffused light that is perfect for making soft and delicate images of these lovely wildflowers.
