Description
Right place, right timing, right shutter speed... and my oh my captured on a -16 Celsius day in which the photographer spent precious few moments outside. I feel most fortunate to have been able to capture this moment, given small window of opportunity the weather allowed and quickness of the actual moment. It is truly a lucky shot. This image is the full body image of the woodpecker. A close-up of the head, titled Cold Snap Snack Closeup, is found elsewhere in my portfolio.
Pictured here is a diminutive male downy woodpecker, caught in the split-second it takes to pluck it's next meal from a birch tree and is hold it in it's beak. Upon further examination, you may also see the birds tongue, ready to lap up dinner, and start the digestive process. The time it takes to complete this act all happens in the "blink of an eye".
Downy woodpeckers are very small, attractive and hardy birds. Black and white in color, the male is distinguished from the female by it's bright red feathers on the back of the head. Although similar to the larger Hairy woodpecker in appearance, distinguished by size and dark marking on the tail feathers, they are not related.
