Noto Cathedral or the Cathedral of San Nicolo is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage site in Noto, Sicily (Italy). Its construction began in 1694, after an earthquake destroyed the ancient city of Noto, and was completed in 1703. The façade was remodeled at the end of the 18th century, while a new dome was built in the 19th century to replace a previous one deteriorated from previous earthquakes. As if all the prior earthquakes were not enough, the church suffered damage from yet another temblor in 1990 but no restoration was undertaken. Likely as a result, much of the church collapsed in 1996. Reconstruction began in 2000 and was a complex process due to the complicated repair history in a great variety of materials and often inadequate workmanship. The church finally reopened in 2007. The facade is of pale yellow limestone, in the Sicilian Baroque style. Atop four pillars sit four statues of saints. On the left tower is mounted the church bell, and on the right tower a clock. In the central tower, there is a large window. The dome sits farther back over the crossing in the nave and is not visible in the front view. The church stands at the top of a spectacular stairway dating back to the 18th century. Along with seven other nearby towns, Noto is part of of the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Site.
