Description
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (or COLA), is a Latin-rite cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in downtown Los Angeles. Opened in 2002, it serves as the mother Church for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, under Archbishop Jose Horacio Gomez. The structure replaced the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana which was damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The new cathedral was constructed in post-modern architectural style and opened in September 2002, with considerable controversy over its deconstructivist and modernist architecture.
The cathedral is named in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the patronal title of Our Lady of the Angels, echoing the full name of the original settlement of Los Angeles ("El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles," translated to "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels"). It is the mother church to over four million professed Catholics in the archdiocese. In addition to the church, COLA also has a mausoleum in the lower floor where the relics of Saint Vibiana are interred, as are those of several past bishops, archbishops, auxiliary bishops, as well as many dignitaries such as the movie actor Gregory Peck.
