George Washington "Carter" Shields was born in Cades Cove in what is now known as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He joined the Federal Army and served over 3 years until seriously wounded by a cannon ball at the Battle of Shiloh. After mustering out of the army he subsequently married Lina Gregory and they moved to Missouri, then to Kansas and eventually returned to Cades Cove where he purchased the land that a cabin was already on, having been built around 1830 possibly by one of his relatives.
