Camelback Mountain, an iconic landmark and sentinel of Phoenix, Arizona, USA, derives its name from its shape, for it resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel. Located between the Arcadia area and Paradise Valley, Camelback Mountain is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing. A cave discovered on the north side of Camelback indicates that it was used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam civilization before they abandoned the area in the 14th century.
When I lived in the Phoenix area in the 1960s, nearly all of Camelback Mountain had been sold to private parties. We wondered how many homes would be built, and how high on the mountain, before something held the expansion in check. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.
The mountain is comprised of two separate rock formations: granite, and red sedimentary sandstone from a much later period. The Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation on the northern slope, and resembles the silhouette of a man kneeling in prayer. It rises approximately 100 feet (30m) and is seen on the left side of this image.
This photograph was shot from a nearby resort, Mountain Shadows, in the summer of 1993 with a Minolta Freedom Escort and Kodak 200 film. It was my first sale on another site. In 2014 I rescanned it from the original print and was able to give it new life as one of my best-selling prints. Nothing has been added that was not in the original scene, including the daytime moon.

Mounting: 1/8" clear acrylic - foam core 15.75" x 11.875"
SOLD multiple times as a framed and matted print, and unframed. Sold as a puzzle in July 2021.
