Description

While I was delivering Shaklee products to a client, a male (rooster) California quail (Callipepla californica brunnescens) approached within close range for an impromptu autumn photo op near Novato, California in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This elegant and elusive ground-dwelling member of the new world quail family is the official bird of the Golden State. At least seven subspecies of California quail have been identified and are year-round residents of low-land brush and residential areas ranging from Baja California throughout the west coast of the U.S. northward to British Columbia, Canada. They have been successfully introduced to various regions of the world, including Hawaii, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile.

They are very strong runners and curiously prefer ground travel over flying, although they are capable of short bursts of flight when escaping danger.

This quail made his way to the top of a ledge for a better view watching over his flock, striking a partridge-like pose. I am reminded of the quail (Coturnix vulgaris species of the ancient Holy Land) God supplied twice to the Israelites while they were in the wilderness (Exodus 16:13; Numbers 11:31-32; Psalm 78:26-27). This was in response to their complaints and demands for meat.

God indeed granted them their desire, so much so that each person gathered no less than 10 homers (the equivalent of 10 donkey-loads or approximately 50 U.S. bushels), as recorded in Numbers 11:32. That’s a LOT of quail!

Just as the bird in this photo climbed to a higher vantage point, the people in ancient times exalted their appetite over worship of God to the point of idolizing their desire for food.

Because of the people’s wrong motives, greed and complaining, the Lord punished them (Numbers 11:33-34).

Here is a lesson for us in the 21st Century :: It is vitally important to be aware of how and what we ask for. Setting priorities in proper perspective indeed makes a lasting difference. Our heart motives matter the most to God!

The next time we have a desire for something, may we pause and ask how this impacts our future and what God thinks, as He truly has our best interest at heart. Indeed, let us remember the Biblical, historic account of the quail, and the lessons we can learn.
