I was at Dak To during the Battle of DakTo in 1967. These were flown by the Australians into Ben Het Special Forces "A Team" camp while I was there and the only resupply aircraft that would fly in because of ground fire. Brave guys those Auggies. Nice image Norman. I was a crane and dozer operator(15th Engineers LE) attached to the 299th Combat Engineers and later to the Special Forces "A Team" at Ben Het. I was 100 yds away from the C-130's that were attacked there and one was destroyed that I buried underground the next day. Small world! WELCOME HOME WARRIOR BUDDY.....
Norman Johnson replied:
I only visited the main camp at the base of the mountain and was there only one day. I took the last Chinook out just as they started to walk the mortars toward the airfield. glad to see you got back OK.

My AF ROTC Commander used to fly C-7A Caribou in Vietnam before becoming a "famous" KC-135 Stratotanker pilot. l/f, ~Jeff at JSJ Photography
Norman Johnson replied:
I was an army writer/photographer in Vietnam so I mostly rode Heuys or Chinooks with the ocassional c-130 thrown in.

I think that is a C-7A “Caribou” vice a C-123 "Provider" but in any case--an ugly plane with great capabilities back in the day. ~Jeff at JSJ Photography
Norman Johnson replied:
You know, I think you're right. It probably is a C-7A Caribou now that I think about it. The reason I thought it was a C-123 was that between them and the C-130 \, that was about all the fixed wing aircraft they flew out of this forward base.
